Wins on the ice for Team Sask, opening day at Winter Games

Monday morning will mark the first ever karate matches at the Canada Games.

REGINA - Wins on the ice highlight a great opening day of competition for Team Sask at the 2023 Canada Winter Games in PEI. Here is a look at the different athletes who competed on Feb. 19.

CURLING - female

  • Hannah Rugg’s Regina rink got off to a great start in draw one. They beat Newfoundland 9-0 in a game that ended after six ends. In the Canada Games, games are eight ends long.

  • The afternoon draw saw Rugg meet Quebec who was playing their first draw of the Games. Saskatchewan jumped out to a 7-2 lead after five ends, but steals of two in the seventh and three in the eighth helped Quebec pull off an 8-7 come-from-behind win.

  • Saskatchewan finished the day 1-1. They have the morning off before meeting  team Northwest Territories at 12pm (SK time). Team NT is also 1-1 after beating Ontario 7-5 in Sunday’s early draw before falling 6-5 to BC in the afternoon.

RINGETTE - female

  • The girls opened play Sunday afternoon against Ontario. Things didn’t go quite as they hoped, falling behind 7-0 and eventually losing the game 9-1. Meagan Sanders of Saskatoon had Saskatchewan’s lone goal.

  • The team will be right back at it on Monday as they meet Team BC at 10:30am (SK time). BC lost its opener on Sunday 9-7 to PEI.

HOCKEY - male

  • Saskatchewan opened play with a 4-1 win over New Brunswick on Sunday afternoon. Luke Moroz, Joby Baumuller, Carsen Adair, and Brayden Smith scored for Saskatchewan. Baumuller also added an assist to lead the team with two points. Logan Edmonstone picked up the win in goal.

  • Saskatchewan is back on the ice Monday at MacLauchlan Arena at 10:30am (SK time) against Manitoba. Manitoba lost 6-4 to Quebec Sunday night. Cole Temple, a Regina Pats first round draft pick (2022, #5 overall) had 2 goals and 2 assists for Manitoba in the loss.

TABLE TENNIS

  • Doubles was on the menu on Sunday, starting with mixed doubles.

  • In preliminary group play, Aryanna Liu (16 years old) and Kevin Lu (14) dropped their opener Sunday morning 3 sets to 0 against a pair from BC. They rebounded in the following match to beat a duo from New Brunswick 3-0. In stage 2 they beat a Yukon pair 3-0 before falling 3-1 to Manitoba. In the placement round Liu and Lu lost 3-2 to Nova Scotia to end their day short of the medal round.

  • Nino Ding of Regina (17 year old male) and Lucy Fan (17) beat their Northwest Territories pair 3-0 in preliminary group play and followed it up with a win over Nunavut 3-0. Still in preliminary group play (4 provinces in this group), Ding and Fan lost 3-1 to a Manitoba duo. In stage two they beat a different Nunavut team 3-0 before falling to BC 3-0. This moved them into the placement round where they beat Newfoundland 3-2. Their day was cut short with a 3-2 loss in their final placement game to Nova Scotia. They failed to reach the quarter final.

  • On Monday, male (Ding/Lu) and female (Fan/Liu) doubles continue. Saskatchewan will compete in all events.

SQUASH

  • Individual male competition - Will Shevkenek opened play with a 3-0 win over Ajit Bala of PEI Sunday afternoon in the preliminary round.  

  • Isaiah Richter beat New Brunswick’s Jacob Brown 3-0.

  • In the female competition, Ellie Gelowitz beat Keely Kovac of Yukon 3-0 in her opening preliminary round match. Khushi Goyal awaits her first match on Monday morning, scheduled for 9am (SK time).

  • Monday, all four athletes will continue preliminary round play at the East Link Centre. 

FREESTYLE SKIING

  • Unfortunately for Team Saskatchewan, Jordan Bonk was unable to compete due to injury. This left Saskatchewan with two girls competing in the Aerials event and no males. 

  • Both Talance Alyse Kalmakoff (13 years old from Maidstone) and Zadee Chapman (16 years old from Battleford) finished 8th and 9th respectively in three jump qualification round. Both made the final.

  • Zadee finished 8th overall while Talance finished in 10th.

SPEED SKATING - short track

  • Monday marks the first day of competition at the North Rustico Canada Games Centre. 

  • Competition begins at 7:20a (SK time) with the female and male 1,500m heats. Quarterfinals will follow. 500m events will happen in the afternoon into the early evening.

  • Team Sask is made up of 5 male skaters and 2 female skaters.

BIATHLON

  • Saskatchewan opens competition on Monday morning with the male 7.5km sprint at 8am (SK time). Four males are competing for Saskatchewan.

  • Following is the female 6km sprint at 8am (SK time). Three females are competing for the province.

GYMNASTICS

  • Saskatchewan’s gymnasts begin competition on Monday at the Norton Diamond Soccer Complex in Charlottetown.

  • Artistic events start at 9am (SK time) with the men’s team competition. There are six males competing for Sask.

  • Trampoline events start at 9:15am (SK time) with female synchro, while male synchro is in the afternoon.

KARATE

  • Monday morning will mark the first ever karate matches at the Canada Games.

  • Matches begin at 7am (SK time) at the Canada Games Multi Sport Dome at Credit Union Place in Summerside.

  • 16-year-old Sadie McFarlane of Prince Albert is coming off wins at the Canada Games qualifier, senior and open divisions in Alberta this past November.
