Canora RCMP: Buchanan house fire linked to wood stove chimney

The home was a complete loss from the fire.

Canora/Sturgis RCMP report there were two house fires this month caused by improper maintenance of a wood burning stove chimney.

CANORA — The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 63 calls from Oct. 19 to Oct. 26, some of which included:

  • three 911 Act calls,
  • one assault,
  • one disturbing the peace,
  • three Fire Prevention Act calls,
  • two Mental Health Act calls,
  • one mischief,
  • one suspicious person,
  • five thefts,
  • one traffic collision,
  • 42 traffic offenses,
  • two uttering threats,
  • one wellbeing check, and
  • two prisoners.

Wood burning stove fire

On Oct. 26, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a structure fire in Buchanan. Investigation showed the fire started in the chimney area. The home was a complete loss from the fire. This is the second structure fire this past month where the cause and origin of a fire has been linked to the chimney of a wood burning stove. Please ensure to complete regular maintenance on your wood burning stove and clean the chimney and stove pipe.

Hearing voices

A female called the Canora/Sturgis on Oct. 25 reporting that she heard voices inside her home.  Police investigated and determined there was no risk to the caller.

Liquor thief arrested

Between Oct. 23 and Oct. 25, a male entered the Canora Co-op liquor store and stole or attempted to steal alcohol on five separate occasions. On Oct. 25, police attempted to arrest the male, but he fled into a nearby residence. Police surrounded the home and the male eventually gave himself up and was arrested without incident. The male was charged with theft under $5,000 x 4 and obstructing a police officer. He was remanded into custody and will appear in Yorkton Provincial Court.

Fiery cattle roundup

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a report of a vehicle fire in the RM of Buchanan on Oct. 22. The caller reported herding his cows back onto this property when a fire started under the hood of the vehicle. The Sturgis Fire Department attended and put out the fire. The vehicle was a complete loss.

Drunken fight with fence

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were called on Oct. 20 to a report of an unknown male who had broken parts of a fence in Canora. Police investigated the call and determined the male had too much to drink and got into a fight with the fence after getting lost in his travels. The matter was dealt with civilly.
