Canora Legion receives welcome provincial support

Laura Ross, Minister of Parks, Culture & Sport, visited the Legion Dugout in Canora to present a $30,000 cheque to the Canora branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.

On June 25, Laura Ross, Minister of Parks, Culture & Sport, along with Terry Dennis, Canora-Pelly MLA, visited the Legion Dugout in Canora to present a $30,000 cheque to the Canora branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, which was represented by President Chris Sokoloski.

“The funds will be used in areas such as upgrading the electrical system and plumbing, as well as improvements at the cemetery,” said Sokoloski. “After going through the grant application process, we are grateful for the support.”

The grant is provided by the Ministry of Parks, Culture & Sport, through the Veterans Service Club Support Program. Ross said the province has increased the support for Legions across the province to $1.5 million, including the Canora grant.

“We believe the Legions are the heart and soul of our communities, socially and spiritually,” she shared. “Legion buildings, such as the Dugout in Canora, have bills to pay, and we are pleased to help with that.”

As a member of the Canora branch, Dennis encouraged Canora and area residents to seriously consider joining the Legion.

“The Canora branch has a small membership, and additional members would be welcome,” said Dennis. “Joining our membership is pretty simple, it’s open to anyone.”

To become a member, or for more information, those interested are encouraged to contact Sokoloski, or Lorie Negraeff, membership chair.

In addition to their stop at the Legion, Ross and Dennis also toured other cultural and recreational sites in Canora and around the region, including: the Ukrainian Heritage Museum in Canora, the Ukrainian Orthodox Heritage Church in Canora, the National Doukhobor Heritage Museum in Veregin, and Duck Mountain Provincial Park near Kamsack.
