Canora RCMP: Man discovered asleep after breaking into building

Alcohol was a contributing factor.

CANORA — The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 34 calls from Jan. 4 to Jan. 11, some of which included:

  • two assaults,
  • one 911 call,
  • one assault with a weapon,
  • one break-and-enter,
  • two failing to comply with conditions,
  • two failing to appear in court,
  • three false alarms,
  • one fraud,
  • one harassing communications,
  • one Mental Health Act call,
  • one mischief, one operation while impaired,
  • one other provincial call,
  • one possession of stolen property,
  • one sexual assault,
  • one suspicious person,
  • one traffic collision,
  • 12 traffic offenses,
  • one wellbeing check.

Wrong time for a nap

On Jan. 8, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP investigated a break-and-enter at a business in Canora.  The suspect broke a window to gain access to the building.

Police searched the building and located the suspect sleeping inside. 

The man was arrested and charged with break-and-enter. Alcohol was a contributing factor.

Assault with door

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched on Jan. 6 to a 911 call for a disturbance inside a residence in Sturgis.

Police learned an intoxicated man in the home threw a door at another person during an argument. Police located the man in the basement and arrested him for assault with a weapon.

Woman assaulted

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a report of a man assaulting a woman on Norway Road in Canora on Jan. 6. The caller advised he chased the man away.

Police were unable to initially locate the man and woman, however police were learned the identity of the two after conducting neighbourhood inquires. The investigation is ongoing.

Stolen vehicle located

On Jan. 4, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP investigated a suspicious vehicle parked in an alleyway in Canora. Police checked the suspicious vehicle, which came back to a Ford Focus stolen out of Yorkton.

The Ford Focus was towed and examined for evidence by the Yorkton RCMP Forensic Identification Section.
