Canora RCMP: Sibling fight over cell phone results in arrest

Canora/Sturgis RCMP also dealt with a highway truck fire, a leaf dumping dispute, an assault, and an attempted liquor theft.

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP investigated a family dispute between a brother and sister in Canora on Oct. 13.

CANORA — The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 45 calls from Oct. 12 to Oct. 19, some of which included:

  • three 911 Act calls,
  • one assault,
  • two assaults with a weapon,
  • one criminal harassment,
  • one disturbing the peace,
  • three Fire Prevention Act calls,
  • one fraud,
  • two Mental Health Act calls,
  • six mischiefs,
  • five suspicious persons,
  • one theft, one traffic collision,
  • 15 traffic offenses,
  • one Trespass Act call,
  • two uttering threats, and
  • 2 wellbeing checks.

Highway truck fire

On Oct. 12, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a truck fire on Highway 5 by Mikado. Police learned a fire started under the hood of a Ford F350. The driver was able to safely steer the truck over to the shoulder and park it on a small approach before the fire spread. 

No brotherly love

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP investigated a family dispute between a brother and sister in Canora on Oct. 13. The sister reported she was assaulted by her brother after an argument occurred over a cell phone. The brother was arrested and charged with assault and theft.

Preeceville leaf disputes continue

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP investigated a report on Oct. 13 that leaves were dumped on the caller’s lawn in retaliation for dumping leaves on the suspect’s lawn the previous day. Police continue to investigate and mediate the ongoing illegal leaf dumpings on the lawns of Preeceville.

Youth arrested

On Oct. 14, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a disturbance complaint at a residence in Canora. Police attended the residence and learned a male youth had assaulted another male and damaged property inside the home. The youth was charged with assault with a weapon, mischief, and was remanded into custody.

Assault

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP investigated a report on Oct. 14 of an assault that had occurred in Preeceville the previous night. The investigation is ongoing.

Banging on window

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched on Oct. 16 to a report in Preeceville that someone keeps banging on the caller’s window and scaring him. Police attended but there were no suspects to be seen.

Attempted liquor theft

On Oct. 17, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to an attempted liquor theft at the Canora Co-op Liquor Store. A suspect has been identified and police continue to investigate.

Smoking and driving

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP investigated a report on Oct. 18 of two males smoking a joint before driving away in a vehicle. Police located the vehicle and arrested one of the males and charged him for failing to comply with conditions of an undertaking.
