Canora RCMP: Suspected impaired driver turns out to be diabetic

A caller reported a Nissan Rogue drove into oncoming traffic, skidded, and hit the ditch on Highway 229. After determining the driver was diabetic, EMS treated them on scene for low blood sugar.

Canora/Sturgis RCMP dealt with wandering children, improper use of 911, a collision with a moose, a prowler, and impaired drivers.

CANORA — The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 96 calls from Aug. 7 to 21, some of which included:

  • 14 911 Act calls,
  • one animal call,
  • one assault,
  • one breach of peace,
  • one break and enter,
  • one Coroners Act call,
  • one disturbing the peace,
  • four failures to comply with court order,
  • five false alarms,
  • four Family Law Act calls,
  • one Fire Prevention Act call,
  • four frauds,
  • two harassing communications,
  • four impaired operation of a motor vehicle,
  • two Liquor Act calls, two lost and founds,
  • two Mental Health Act calls,
  • two mischiefs,
  • nine suspicious persons,
  • three thefts,
  • 13 traffic collisions,
  • one trespass at night,
  • four wellbeing checks,
  • four prisoners, and
  • two Child, Youth and Family Services Act calls.

Children found wandering alone

On Aug. 16, the Canora RCMP were dispatched to a report of a child walking the middle of Highway 5 by Buchanan wearing pajamas. Police attended and took custody of the child.

While in the process of locating the child’s family, a second child was located by police wandering the street in Buchanan only wearing a pull-up.

The mother of the children was located and the children were returned home. Yorkton Child and Family Services assisted with the investigation.

Not impaired, diabetic

The Canora RCMP were dispatched on Aug. 19 to a possible impaired driver. The caller reported a Nissan Rogue drove into oncoming traffic, skidded, and hit the ditch on Highway 229. Police attended and determined the driver was not impaired but was diabetic. EMS treated the driver on scene for low blood sugar.

Moose collision

On Aug. 19, the Canora RCMP were dispatched to a report that a vehicle struck a moose on a grid road in the RM of Good Lake. The vehicle sustained damages to the windshield and roof. The driver of the vehicle was not injured.

911 is not the phone book

A man from Canora called 911 asking for the phone number for the Canadian Tire in Yorkton on Aug. 20 as he is looking to buy a television and a cell phone. Police spoke with the caller and determined there was no emergency and educated them on the proper use of 911.

Impaired driver

The Canora RCMP were dispatched to a possible impaired driving on Highway 5 by Invermay on Aug. 20. The caller reported a brown GMC Sierra was swerving all over the road and was travelling at a high rate of speed.

Police located and stopped the GMC Sierra by Rama. The male driver provided a roadside breath sample into an alcohol screening device and failed. The driver was arrested and provided two breath samples of 90mg% and 80mg%.

The man was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and driving while over 80mg%.

Prowler

On Aug. 12, the Canora RCMP investigated a report that a male was caught prowling outside a home in Canora at 12:30 a.m. The man was known to the homeowner and was told to leave. The investigation is ongoing.

Suspicious male arrested on warrant

The Canora RCMP were dispatched on Aug. 9 a report of a suspicious man wearing a backpack walking away from a parked Honda Civic with its hood up on a grid road in the RM of Sliding Hills. Police attended the scene and located the man.

The man was arrested on outstanding warrant of arrest for taking motor vehicle without consent, being in possession of a stolen licence plate, and for failing to comply with conditions out of Ontario for serious property and assault charges.

The man was remanded into custody and held for court.

Small dog dies after attack

The Canora RCMP were dispatched to a call that two big black dogs attacked a small dog in Canora on Aug. 8. Police investigated and learned the caller’s dog was attacked in its own yard by the two roaming dogs. The small dog suffered serious injuries and later died. Police have identified the dogs and their owners. The investigation is ongoing.

Erratic driver tests over the limit

On August 8, the Canora RCMP were dispatched to a report of an intoxicated female driving on Highway 9. Multiple callers reported a female driver was driving all over the road and had swerved multiple times into the oncoming lane.

Police located and stopped the vehicle north of Endeavour. The female driver was found to have obvious signs of intoxication. When police asked her if she had consumed any alcohol, she replied “maybe a little.”

The woman was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle. The female provided two breath samples of 210mg% and 200mg%. The female was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and driving while over 80mg%. The female’s drivers’ licence was suspended and her vehicle impounded for 60 days.
