Eaglestone Lodge sidewalk replacement project begins

The plan is for all the perimeter sidewalks to be replaced, with some connecting sidewalks to be added in the courtyard to allow for increased safety and accessibility for the Eaglestone community

KAMSACK — While one portion of old sidewalk at Eaglestone Lodge was replaced with new, wider sidewalk on Oct. 12, the rest of the crumbling walkways will be dealt with in the spring.

“We started a small piece this fall with a plan to get the rest done first thing in the spring upon snow melting,” said Kendra Kerr, a board member who as an occupational therapist in the region is involved with accessibility issues and agreed to manage the project for the Lodge.

“We adjusted the size of the sidewalk from three feet wide to four feet wide to improve accessibility, especially with using a walker, wheelchair or power mobility device such as a scooter or power chair,” Kerr said. The plan is for all the perimeter sidewalks to be replaced, with some connecting sidewalks to be added in the courtyard to allow for increased safety and accessibility for the Eaglestone community.

The bulk of the project is being funded by a New Horizons for Seniors (NHSP) federal grant that supports community-based projects that are designed by seniors for seniors, she said. This program funds projects that empower seniors in their communities and contributes to improving their health and well-being.

Added to a New Horizons grant of $25,000 are donations of $5,000 each from the Town of Kamsack and RM of Cote, and $2,500 raised in the Lodge’s 50/50 raffle.
