Yorkton Council proclaimed Veteran's Week for Nov. 5-11.
The request had come from the Royal Canadian Legion, General Alexander Ross Branch #77 in Yorkton, when Poppy Chair Peter Wyatt appeared before the regular meeting of Council Monday.
Wyatt told Council the week was another a chance to say thank you "to those many men and women who so bravely gave themselves to give us the opportunities and freedoms that we have today."
The week will include several events, including a flag raising ceremony at City Hall Nov. 5.
Poppy Tag Day begins the Remembrance Day Campaign and begins Saturday, October 26, with the Cadets, Scouts and Cubs collecting.
Wreath sales begin Oct. 28, with veterans and members of the Legion and other volunteers going to local businesses and selling the wreaths.
Sunday, Nov 3, at 11:00 a.m. an annual church parade will be held for all veterans at Westview United Church.
As a special event this year the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League's Yorkton Terriers will wear camo-jerseys for a game Nov. 10 versus Kindersley at the Farrell Agencies Arena.
The Remembrance Day ceremony will be held at the Farrell Agencies Arena in the Gallagher Centre Nov. 11.
"Remembrance Day is a very important day," said Wyatt as it brings community together to mark the freedoms protected by sacrifices made in the past.
Council unanimously supported proclamation of Veteran's Week.
