SASKATOON — Saskatoon residents are gearing up to celebrate Emergency Preparedness Week, which runs from May 7 to 13. The annual event, which takes place across Canada, aims to encourage people to take practical steps to protect themselves and their families in the event of an emergency.
This year’s theme, "Be prepared. Know Your Risks," highlights the fact that emergencies can happen unexpectedly at any time, making preparedness crucial.
Being aware of the risks specific to your area and taking the necessary precautions can help individuals and communities respond more effectively to emergencies, reduce the risk of harm, and even save lives.
"Emergency Preparedness Week is an important reminder that disasters can happen at any time and being prepared can make all the difference,” said Emergency Management Pamela Director Goulden-McLeod.
“We encourage everyone to take the time to review their emergency plans, update their emergency kits, and learn about the potential hazards in their community. By taking a few simple steps to prepare and plan for emergencies, we can become better prepared to face any unexpected situation that may come our way."
Residents and business owners are encouraged to participate in Emergency Preparedness Week by following a few simple steps, including knowing the risks specific to their community, developing an emergency plan tailored to their family or workplace, creating an emergency kit and following trustworthy sources such as the City of Saskatoon, Saskatoon Fire Department, Saskatoon Police Service and Saskatoon Emergency Management.
Additionally, residents can sign up for notifynow messages, which sends public safety messages to Saskatoon residents via telephone, email, or text message during public safety concerns.
