Rhonda Stock is amazed at how quickly the Happy Little Hooves animal sanctuary has grown since it opened at the start of the year.

The sanctuary began with three animals, and they have taken in 12 more, bringing their total to 15. Happy Little Hooves aims to provide a forever home for the ponies, donkeys, miniature horses, mini-mule and goat in their care.

“We thought we would start an actual sanctuary and see how it goes, and it exploded,” she said.

They are close to capacity right now, as they want to make sure they still have room in case Animal Protection Services brings them additional animals.

An open house was held at the sanctuary southwest of Estevan on Saturday afternoon. Visitors enjoyed tours of the site and interacted with the animals. Pony rides were offered to the children who attended. Other highlights included a concession and a silent auction to raise funds for Happy Little Hooves’ needs.

“We wanted to introduce everybody to the animals, show them where they are living and what we do, and give them the story on some of the animals so that people know where we are and what we’re about.”

They have been fundraising for new fence for the property. And they always accept donations, particularly hay for the animals.

The next edition of Southeast Lifestyles will have more on this story.
