Police will be watching 8th Street for unsanctioned “cruising”

SASKATOON — The Saskatoon Police Service has something to say to drivers about “Cruise Weekend.” They will have a high-profile presence on 8th Street.

The annual Rock 102 Show and Shine event is taking place Aug. 19 through 21 in the city, police not, adding that in past years, vehicular and pedestrian traffic volumes increase in the area of 8th Street as a result of what has become known as “Cruise Weekend”.

“The Saskatoon Police Service Traffic Unit reminds members of the motoring public that activities along 8th Street are not part of any sanctioned event and that all traffic laws and regulations will continue to be enforced by a high-profile police presence in and around the area,” states a release issued by SPS, “To facilitate traffic flow and ensure public safety, traffic restrictions may be put in effect.”

SPS adds that the show and shine component of the event will take place on Sunday and traffic restrictions will be in effect in the downtown core for most of the day as a result.

The downtown car show that runs Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. is Western Canada’s largest and more than 900 cars are expected to line 14 blocks from 1st Avenue to 4th Avenue and between 20th Street and 23rd Street.
