About 550 lineal feet of concrete sidewalk in Kamsack’s downtown core that had been cracked or bumpy were ground into smooth surfaces last week.

Town council had allocated $10,000 of the approved sidewalk repair budget in order to hire Precision Concrete of Edmonton to repair the sidewalks containing trip hazards in the town. Sidewalks located in the downtown core and in front of public buildings were given priority.

There were over 100 sites that were identified as potentially hazardous, Mayor Rod Gardner said last week.

During town council’s regular meeting of June 22, council approved the application from Alex Riehl to join the fire department. A recommendation of the medical services committee to appoint Kay Bailey to the committee as a member at large was approved.

Council agreed to have companies contacted that do asphalt slurry sealing on roads and identify the top 10 road locations in the community that require repair either by a slurry or asphalt paving.

It was agreed to develop a standard policy by which council could make donations to various groups.

Council decided to advertise for sale by tender four vacant lots located at 143 Avenue Road, 402 Alberta Street and 217 and 223 Nykolaishen Drive and three commercial buildings located at 323 Fort Pelly Avenue, 432 Second Street and 527 Queen Elizabeth Boulevard.

The administration was instructed to complete reference checks of two companies with the intent to enter a one-year agreement to supply the community with natural gas at a cost of 0.1432 cents per cubic metre, which would result in an estimated cost savings of more than $15,000 a year.

A bylaw was introduced, given three readings and adopted, providing for the hiring of Michael J. Robey as the town superintendent.

He is to begin work July 6. Rod Gardner was authorized to attend the Mayors’ Summer School at the University of Regina August 16 to 18.
