SASKATOON — Saskatoon Fire Department responded to two structures over the weekend, with many combustible materials found in one of the houses.
The SFD responded to a house fire in the 400 block of 9th Street East Friday, Feb. 24, after receiving the call at 10:16 p.m.
Firefighters began with an exterior extinguishment, but it proved challenging as they advanced to the living room and controlled the fire at 10:42 p.m. The house was vacant at the time of the fire.
The entire structure had an excessive fire load making firefighting, the safety of firefighters and the movement of hose lines more challenging. No injuries to civilians or firefighters occurred as a result of this fire.
The fire investigator determined the fire originated in the living room and was caused by an unattended burning candle near the combustible materials. The damage is estimated at $10,000.
The SFD fire prevention team will follow up with the property owner to address the excessive combustibles identified throughout the structure.
SFD responded to a separate incident on Sunday, Feb. 26, at the 100 block of Avenue E South at 1 a.m. Fire crews arrived within four minutes and saw flames from a bungalow’s main floor.
All utilities were shut down for safety at the scene as fire crews began extinguishing the fire outside the structure. Firefighters found the location of the fire in the bedroom.
The fire was controlled at 1:21 a.m. and ensured safe before turning over the scene to the fire investigator, who determined the blaze originated in the bedroom’s main floor. The cause of the fire, which cost an estimated $350,000, is still under investigation.
It was later found some smoke alarms were missing from the structure, but the ones remaining alerted all seven occupants, who were able to evacuate safely. No injuries to civilians or firefighters occurred.
