The Society for the Involvement of good Neighbors Inc. (SIGN) was looking to the City of Yorkton for funds to offset losses in its Senior Mobility Program.

“Historically the City of Yorkton has provided an annual operational grant to Society for the Involvement of Good Neighbors, Inc. (SIGN) in the amount of $30,000 to assist in the funding of a Senior Mobility program,” explained Shannon Bell, Director of Finance at the regular meeting of Yorkton Council Monday.

“In 2015 SIGN realized a net deficit in the Senior Mobility program amounting to $5,228. SIGN is requesting from the City of Yorkton $5,000 to offset the deficit that they incurred.

“In speaking with Dale Polischuk, Business Manager with SIGN, he attributes the deficit to increasing costs and revenues remaining level. Over the past years they have been able to minimize the effects of the increasing costs however that is no longer the case.”

As background Bell noted, “The Senior Mobility program provides low cost transportation to seniors on weekdays. The program is available to anyone who is 55 or older at a cost of $6.00. The service not only provides for the transportation to and from destinations, the drivers are always ready to lend a hand when necessary.”

The Administration recommendation was That Council approve the request of the SIGN Senior Mobility Program to fund an additional $5,000.00 for the over expenditures experienced in the 2015 operating year; and further that funds be used from the Rainy Day Fund.

“I believe the program is a real asset to the city,” said Councillor Chris Wyatt who moved approval of the recommendation which found unanimous support from Council.
