Three vehicles collided while waiting for a train to pass near Melfort over the weekend.

On July 20, at 3:35 pm, Melfort Fire and Rescue responded to a report of a three vehicle collision near the intersection of Highway 3 and Highway 41A.

“Traffic was stopped on both sides waiting for the train to cross the intersection,” said Jason Everitt, Melfort’s fire chief. “One vehicle failed to stop and collided with vehicles that were stopped already, waiting for the train to cross.

“It hit the last vehicle that was parked, pushing that vehicle to the one in front of it.”

None of the vehicles collided with the train.

Crews established a safe work area and traffic control measures,

Canadian National Railway (CN) crews split the train to allow for the passage of emergency vehicles.

“CN staff actually stopped the train and broke the train apart to clear the intersection for emergency vehicles. So that was greatly appreciated.”

Paramedics assessed all occupants and transported two to hospital with minor injuries. Other occupants were assessed and released at the scene.

One vehicle was towed from the scene.
