SASKATOON — The Saskatoon Fire Department is reminding residents to avoid leaving pots and pans unattended when cooking after one caused a structure fire Tuesday night, Jan. 24.

Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms alerted the occupants, as both devices warned occupants to evacuate immediately.

SFD also reminds residents to ensure smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are installed and always have them tested.

SFD dispatch received the call at 7:40 p.m. of a basement suite fire in the 1600 block of Prince of Wales Avenue.

Three fire engines, one ladder truck, a rescue unit and the Battalion Chief were dispatched to the scene. The first arriving crews reported smoke coming out of the team.

Upon entering the structure, firefighters had to evacuate one occupant, who was trying to look for their pet.

Firefighters identified a small fire on the stove in the basement suite and extinguished it, removing the burnt pot. No occupants, firefighters, or pets were injured in the fire.

Fire crews turned the scene to their investigator, who determined the cause was accidental due to unattended cooking, resulting in an estimated $20,000 in damages.
