Woman accused of killing 2-year-old boy has first appearance in Saskatoon court

A warrant of committal was issued for a woman on second-degree murder charges

SASKATOOON – A Saskatoon woman accused of killing a two-year-old boy last year made her first appearance in Saskatoon Provincial Court Monday.

A warrant of committal was issued for 37-year-old Ashley Rachelle Rae Ahpay as she awaits trial on charges of second-degree murder and mischief.

Saskatoon Police Service Major Crime Section charged Ahpay this week following what they said was a lengthy investigation, which involved the SPS Child Abuse Unit and the Ministry of Social Services. Before laying charges against Ahpay, police say they consulted with medical professionals and Crown prosecutors.

Police say that they responded to a call at approximately 11:30 a.m. on July 8, 2020, for a report that a two-year-old was unresponsive in an apartment on the 100 block of Avenue T South. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Ahpay appears again in Saskatoon Provincial Court on Oct. 27 to speak to the matter.
