YORKTON - An upgrade for traffic pole and signal replacement for the intersection of Broadway Street and Myrtle Avenue, will finally be undertaken this year.

The project had gone to tender in 2022, but at that time, the lowest bid received exceeded the approved budget and therefore did not proceed, explained René Richard, Director of Engineering and Asset Management with the city at the regular meeting of Yorkton Council Monday.

“Consequently during the 2023 capital budget deliberations, additional funding was set aside to be added to the existing budget for the 2024 construction season,” he said.

In January, the Invitation to Tender for the 2024 Traffic Control Signal Upgrade Program was advertised. The work includes complete upgrades of the traffic signals, poles and equipment at the intersection of Broadway Street and Myrtle Avenue.

Only one tender was received for $530,059 from Can Traffic Services Ltd..

The bid was deemed to be best value as it was complete and was within budgetary estimates, said Richard.

The total approved budget for this project is $670,000.

The lowest bid would amount to $561,862.54 (including PST) and the remainder would be utilized as contingency for this project as was indicated in the approved budget required, offered Richard.

The work is to be completed between Aug. 1 and Oct. 30, 2024 as per prior consultation with surrounding business owners.

Once a solid construction schedule is completed, the business owners in the immediate area will be notified as to when exactly the work is scheduled to take place, said Richard.

Council unanimously approved accepting the tender, but Councillor Darcy Zaharia did note he was not exactly comfortable given only one tender, but it was under budget.
