YORKTON - The Yorkton Kinsmen Club are moving into new digs and they are hoping the City of Yorkton will forgo property taxes on their new home.

Elmer Hollinger, president of the club appeared before the regular meeting of Yorkton Council Monday to make the request.

Hollinger explained the club has purchased the former Grace Presbyterian Church at 66 Park Street, and will be remodelling it into a clubhouse they hope to occupy by September.

The building will also be utilized by the Kinettes and by Yorkton Minor Hockey, he explained.

“This new space will suit us better,” he said.

In making the request for a property tax exemption, Hollinger noted when it was operated as a church it was not taxed, and has been empty since the church closed.

If the facility is tax free it would provide the club with additional dollars to fund programs in the city.

Hollinger said in the near 80-year history of the club in the community the club has donated some $55 million to a varied range of project including being a major contributor to the Kinsman Arena, Century Field and of course Telemircale including $60,000 at the most recent telethon.

Council chose to send the request to city administration to provide a report at a future meeting before making a decision on the request.
