Cards slip to third in WMBL East

The Yorkton Cardinals went 2-2 on the week and slipped to third in the Western Major Baseball League’s Eastern Division. Swift Current tops the Division with Regina two games back, and the Cardinals three games off-the-pace.

The Yorkton Cardinals went 2-2 on the week and slipped to third in the Western Major Baseball League’s Eastern Division.

Weyburn, Melville and Moose Jaw round out the Division.

Sunday the Cardinals let one get away late as they visited the Moose Jaw Miller Express.

Yorkton took the lead with a run in the second, only to have the Miller Express score a pair in the home-half of the second.

Yorkton tied it with one in the third, only to have Moose Jaw go up 3-2 in the fourth.

A single Cardinal run in the fifth tied the game 3-3, and Yorkton would add three in the sixth for a 6-3 lead.

In the seventh Moose Jaw added a run to draw within two, then in the ninth with one out scored three for a comeback 7-6 win.

Garrett Fort would pop a solo home run for Yorkton, while Zak Kellogg had a three run shot for the home side.

Richard England started on the mound for Yorkton going 4.1 innings allowing six hits, three runs, all earned, and striking out seven.

It would be Austin Douglas would be in the game in the ninth inning to take the loss, walking two, and giving up three hits, and three runs, all of them earned.

Rivals

Yorkton welcomed rival Melville to Jubilee Park Saturday on a cool night when the Cardinals just never could take flight.

The Mills scored four in the second, added two in the third, then pounded Yorkton relief pitching for eight in the seventh, including a grand slam home run by Harrison Hull, on their way to a 15-4 win.

Justin Johnston took the loss as the Cardinal starter. He went three innings, allowing seven hits, and six runs, five of those earned.

Wednesday win

The Moose Jaw Miller Express visited Jubilee Field in Yorkton last Wednesday taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

The Cardinals would score three in the third, and add another three in the fourth to lead 6-1.

The Miller Express would respond with three in the sixth to close the gap to 6-4.

The Cardinals would respond with a pair in the home half of the sixth, then added four in the seventh for a 12-4 lead.

Moose Jaw would add an eighth inning run to round out the 12-5 win.

Jamie Whitehead would start for Yorkton going five innings, allowing only one earned run, and striking out four.

Dylan Borman had a three runs batted in night, while Cory Cantebury and Caden Rosholt both had two RBIs.

Last Tuesday

Lethbridge rolled into Jubilee Park last Tuesday, and the Cardinals greeted them with a run in the home half of the first inning.

But that would be it for the Yorkton offence.

The Bulls were not finished by far though. They took the lead with two in the second, added three in the fifth and two in the sixth to round out a 7-1 win.

Gavin Collins started for Yorkton, scattering three hits over four innings of work, allowing five runs, all of the earned to take the loss. Collins also walked five and struck out seven.

The Bulls would return to Jubilee Park Friday, and again took the early lead with two runs in the third.

The Cardinals cut the lead in half with a single run in the fourth.

In the sixth Lethbridge got that run back to take a 3-1 lead.

In the seventh Yorkton plated a pair to draw within one.

The Cardinals would then add four in the eighth to take their first lead of the contest 7-3.

Lethbridge would add one in the ninth to round out the 7-4 win for the home side.

Kody Rock started the game for Yorkton and went five innings allowing three hits and three runs, but only one of those earned, while striking out seven, but he would not be around for the decision.

The win would go to Trevor Wallace based on one inning of relief work.

Up next

The Cardinals were scheduled to play in Swift Current last night (Tuesday), but results were not available at press time. The teams meet up again tonight, (Wednesday), as well.

Friday Melville will visit Jubilee Field in Yorkton.

Saturday the Cardinals head to Weyburn, and Sunday return home to host Regina in a game with a 2:05 p.m. start.
