After weighing out her options, local track and field star Kelsey Haczkewicz has decided on becoming a University of Regina Cougar this fall.

Haczkewicz had a great cross-country running season this year, which wrapped up in Kingston, Ont. at the Canadian Cross Country Championships. She placed 35th out of 197 runners in her division.

After weighing out her options, local track and field star Kelsey Haczkewicz has decided on becoming a University of Regina Cougar this fall.  According to Haczkewicz she had a few schools working to recruit her for their cross-country and track & field teams.

“In the end I chose the U of R for a number of reasons,” said Haczkewicz. “I’m really excited about the quality of the coaching staff, I’ve seen what they can do to groom the talented athletes they have on the team.”

Haczkewicz has been accepted to the Faculty of Science and will have five years of running eligibility at the school.  Upon the completion of her first degree, she hopes to be accepted into the College of Medicine at the U of S.

According to Haczkewicz’s coach, the U of R will be a good fit.

“The school is close to home, and she will have an opportunity to contribute to the squad right from the start,” he said. The school is working on recruiting another female distance star from near Regina, who alongside Haczkewicz, would give the Cougars quite a potent one-two punch.

Haczkewicz follows in the footsteps of fellow YRHS distance running great Avery Westberg.  Westberg captured eight provincial championships at the YRHS before embarking on a stellar career at the U of R.  Most recently, her former YRHS teammate TJ McBride, the 2016 provincial champion at 3000m, began his USport (formerly CIS) University career with the Cougars.
