Johnstone, Thomson huge for the Harvest last week

The Yorkton Harvest got three of a possible four points throughout Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League action over the past seven days.

The Yorkton Harvest got three of a possible four points throughout Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League action over the past seven days.

The trio of points snaps the team's losing skid that saw them drop games in Moose Jaw, Tisdale and Regina, the last two were home games.

Last Wednesday, Yorkton headed to Notre Dame to play the Hounds and came away with an 8-2 victory in Wilcox. The game also saw the visitors shoot 44 pucks on net as they outshot the hosts 44-28.

The game was also a breakout night for rookie forward Ben Johnstone who scored his first hat trick and then added a fourth goal late in the game. He scored the opening two goals of the game in the first period. Then he scored to make it 3-0 at 19:03 in the second period. His second goal came shorthanded.

Teammate Roddy Sewap would make it 4-0 four minutes later.

Dustin Skilliter drew assists on each of Johnstone's goals on the night.

Johnstone's natural hat trick, plus a fourth goal in the third period was good for the team's confidence, says Graham Garrett, head coach of the Harvest, who also added that Johnstone's been scoring goals at "all levels" he's played at.

"It (also) gets us back that winning feeling."

With the score 4-0, Dustin Minto added another Harvest goal while Kellen McBain finally got his team on the board at the midway mark of the second period. Ryley Stefanyshyn and Kade Halabuza drew multiple assists in the period.

In the third period, Yorkton continued to pour it on, on goals by Skilliter (2nd), Yanni Mamais before Johnstone tallied for the fourth of the game.

Against the Tisdale Trojans Sunday afternoon, Garrett said the reason they didn't lose was due to the work of netminder Kale Thomson.

"Kale Thompson was phenomenal," stated Garrett, who added that Yorkton had one shot on goal for three-quarters of the opening period. They did manage to score on it, but for most of the remainder, it was all Trojans attacking and Garrett credited Thomson with keeping the team in the game.

"Unfortunately we couldn't get the win for him".

Garrett added that Yorkton dominated the overtime session too, with six shots on goal to Tisdale's none.

NEXT ACTION Yorkton is on the road tomorrow night when they head back to Wilcox to play the Notre Dame Argos.
