With the volleyball season in full swing, two teams of Spartan junior girls have been formed at the Kamsack Comprehensive Institute and to date both have competed in two tournaments.

Comprised of students in grades 7 to 9, the KCI Blue team consists of 13 athletes, while the KCI White team has eight players, said Juliana Nichol, their coach.

The teams attended a 12-team tournament in Canora on September 24 when the Blue team placed first, Nichol said. In playoffs the KCI Blue team defeated Canora two straight sets and then met the Yorkton Regional team which Kamsack defeated two of three sets.

The Blue team has a promising season, and the tournament helped build a lot of confidence for the players of the White team, she said.

On October 2, the two Spartan teams hosted a four-team tournament that involved teams from Canora and Invermay.

The Blues placed second, behind Canora and the Whites were very close in several of its games, Nichol said.

Helping Nichol coach the teams are Amanda Carpenter and Naomi Tensen. Kaylie Bowes, a Grade 12 student, helps with the coaching of the White team.

The Blue team was expected to compete in a tournament in Invermay October 16 and both teams were to participate in a tournament in Preeceville on October 23. Meanwhile, both teams were to play in Preeceville on Thursday (October 8) and Sturgis was to come to Kamsack today (October 15).

Volleyball season will end with the District competitions on October 31.
