YORKTON - The Legacy Co-op Disc Golf Tour held its final event of the season as golfers took to Patrick Park Disc Golf Course in Yorkton Saturday.

“After all the rain and cold this week, the sun was shining Saturday making it perfect for fall disc golf making it a great final event after the successes of Kamsack and Churchbridge,” said tournament chairperson Trevor Lyons of the Parkland Association of Disc Golf.

“It was great to see the support of players from as far away as Regina, and of course a big thanks to Legacy Co-op which has been the tour sponsor for several years and we certainly hope they are back in 2024.”

Gage McKay from Fort Qu'Appelle topped the event throwing an impressive minus-10 over 36 baskets for a four-stroke win over Arlen Nickel of Regina and Matthew Verhoog of Fort Qu’Appelle.

In the MA40 (recreational division) Dale Silva of Regina took top spot with a minus-four, with Saskatoon’s Trent Trew second with a plus-five.

Jeri-Ann Brownridge of Regina was the top female throwing a minus-four.

Junior female 18 division Keziah Verhoog of Fort Qu'Appelle was tops, while Alethea Verhoog also of Fort Qu'Appelle was first in the FJ12 division.

In the FA40 Division a plus-31 by Sharon Trew of Saskatoon was tops, with Shawna Scott of Regina at plus-nine tops in FA1.

While Saturday’s event wraps up the Legacy Co-op Tour for the year, plans are already under way for 2024.

“We certainly plan to see the Legacy Co-op Tour again, but we have some new ideas we are working on,” said Lyons.

So what might disc golfers see that is new in 2024?

“Well, to start with we have recently contacted the City of Yorkton with an idea where the PADG would fund a small addition to the course that will in time add a challenge to the course and be a benefit to the community too. I can’t reveal details yet, but we are pretty excited by it,” he said.

There are some new event ideas too.

“It’s funny how ideas pop up, we were just talking at Saturday’s event about how it would be great to see some of the older golfers out for tournaments,” said Lyons. “So why not have a tourney for players 35, or 40-plus. Just a fun 18 to build the community. We just need a sponsor to see it happens, so drop us a note if interested.”

Lyons said there is also an idea to hold an event that would be part of Culture Days Yorkton in 2024.

“If you go back to the 1920s there is a connection between Saskatchewan and the earliest days of what became disc golf. Our idea is to mark that connection with a fun local event,” said Lyons, adding disc golfers should watch for more information into the new year.
