Young students from Loreburn Central School put their rock-pushing and ice-sweeping skills to the test on Friday, February 3 at the curling rink in Strongfield when the K-6 classes held their annual 'Tin Can Bonspiel'.

The event featured the kids learning the ins and outs of the sport under the guidance of local enthusiasts, substituting the regulation-size curling rocks for smaller versions more suited for the youngsters.  Meanwhile, volunteer parents organized the day's lunch program and enjoyed watching their children take part in a sport that is predominantly played by adults.  The kids had a ball and seemed to enjoy sending the rocks skidding down the ice and 'hurrying hard' with their brooms.  Along the way, organizers hoped the kids learned about what it takes to work on a team and the values of good sportsmanship.

Participants in the bonspiel walked away with prizes and goodies at the end of the day; the proverbial 'cherry on top' for all the students after spending the day having fun and fine-tuning their curling skills.  It remains to be seen if one or more of the enthusiastic Loreburn students ends up throwing rocks down the ice at a future Brier event.
