Just in time for the new academic athletics season, Yorkton This Week has a new sports reporter.
Stefanie Davis comes to us from St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador where she graduated from Memorial University with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in English and Communications. She then took an eight-month detour through Halifax to tack on a journalism degree.
Stefanie did not start out with an eye to pursuing sports journalism, but kind of fell into it naturally.
“Going into it, I didn’t even think of sports journalism as a thing,” she said. “I don’t know why, but once I got there, I started gravitating toward sports because I did a lot of sports growing up. I was familiar with it and then I just realized that there were career options for sports journalists and it was the way I wanted to explore the career.”
Her own main sports were basketball and volleyball and, particularly, soccer, which she played competitively at the provincial level. She is very much looking forward to covering those and all the sports Yorkton has on offer.
Stefanie explored a number of options, but when the job here came up chose Yorkton, even though she has never been to Saskatchewan.
“I was excited to go and have a new adventure,” she said. “Yorkton seemed like good fit, a nice, small, safe place for me.”
Flying into Regina, her first impression of the province was “very flat,” she quipped.
When it came to the people, though, she quickly started to notice some similarity with folks back on “the rock.”
“Once I got to Yorkton, people seemed very friendly and nice,” she said.
Having never really strayed far from home, except for school in Nova Scotia, meeting new people and experiencing life outside “the Newfoundland bubble” is what she is most looking forward to, she said.
