Raiders play in Viterra Senior Bowl

Part of win by Team South in 12-man game

The Viterra Senior Bowl was hosted recently in Regina and the Yorkton Regional High School football program was well represented.

The Raider program had four players take the field in the 12-man game; slotBack Carson Sveinbjornson, defensive back Tyler Harasymuk, linebacker Gabe Loster, and quarterback Jordin Rusnack.

Raider coach Jason Boyda was also involved taking on defensive L=line coaching duties with Team South.

Boyda said all four YRHS players played well, as Team South emerged with a 10-7 win over their northern rivals.

It was obviously a low-scoring affair, but Boyda said that was almost to be expected.

“The offence takes more time to jell and get cohesion,” he said.

Defence by its nature is more reactive.

“Here’s your assignment, now go do your job, get to a gap, stop somebody,” said Boyda of the defensive philosophy.

While the South offence did not roll up big points, Rusnack was selected as Quarterback/Receiver of the Game.

“The intent of the Viterra Senior Bowl game is to showcase the best high school football players in 6, 9, & 12 man, who have used their last year of eligibility, in a North vs. South all-star game,” detailed the Football Saskatchewan website. “Every year Football Saskatchewan asks all high school coaches throughout the province to nominate players from their school, who they feel are capable of playing and competing with the best football players in the Province.”

“The Viterra Senior Bowl Game changes locations between Regina’s Mosaic Stadium and SMF Field. The 6, 9, & 12 man games feature the top 170 graduating high school players from the Northern and Southern parts of the province. The game was developed to promote and further develop the game of football for residents of Saskatchewan. This game is a showcase for all scouts, coaches, players and fans that love and have contributed to the game of football in Saskatchewan.”
