The Sacred Heart boys’ soccer team started their season at a tournament in Kipling on Sept. 16 and 17. The team is coming off of two consecutive provincial silver medals.
Coach Jeanne Fetsch called this a “rebuilding year” for the team, as the Saints lost 6 starters from last year’s team, including four defenders and a dominant central midfielder.
Fetsch said the tournament showed good competition and had many 3A schools in attendance, as well as last year’s 2A provincial champions Notre Dame.
The silver streak continued in this tournament for the Saints with two wins and a loss.
They had a strong start, defeating Notre Dame 6 -0. Goal scorers were Nick Fetsch (5) and Austin Thomas (1). Kyle Schmidt recorded the shut out for the Saints.
Game two was their only loss. Weyburn outscored them 5-3. Saints’ goals were scored by Nick Fetsch (2) and Austin Thomas (1).
Game three was a very strong game for the Saints, defeating Swift Current 4 to 1. Goal scorers Austin Thomas (2), Nick Fetsch (1) and Nathan Cochrane (1).
Fetsch said the Saints played two excellent games and one they would like to take back and re-do. They’ll be working on developing strong defenders and improving on their defensive play.
Players who stood out to Fetsch in the tournament were goalie Kyle Schmidt, Dawson Malinowski who “really stepped up in the central midfield position,” and Nick Fetsch who found the back of the net eight times in the three games.
