The Yorkton Pirates Tennis Club is currently looking for local area youths under the age of 14 (as of January 1) to compete in the sport of tennis at the 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games in Estevan July 24-30.
“We have places in the club for any of the young people that are under 14 that just want to do a little bit of practicing in case they want to try out for the Saskatchewan Summer Games,” said Tennis Club Secretary/Treasurer Blaine Stoll. “Any players, male or female, under the age of 14 as of January 1 that would like to come out are welcome.”
Stoll said that there is no cost for the young players to attend the tennis sessions – which take place Sunday afternoons at 2:30pm and Thursday afternoons at 4:30pm – and are held at the Yorkton Tennis Courts located behind the Yorkton Regional High School and Western Development Museum.
In addition, Stoll mentioned that players don’t need to worry about supplying their own equipment, as the Yorkton Pirates Tennis Club has more than enough to go around. “As long as they come out with safe court footwear then they’re welcome to come out and try,” suggested Stoll, continuing, “Those that have tennis gear are welcome to use their own, but if they don’t have anything then we have racquets and equipment that we can lend to them.”
Not only is the club looking for youth to join, they’re also looking for more teens and adults as well. “While the older people can’t play in the Summer Games, we’ll still be more than happy to welcome new players to the club,” said Stoll. “Anyone wanting to try tennis out is welcome to come out when our club meets.”
Stoll said that the first couple of sessions are free, but after that people must purchase a club membership to continue practicing with the club.
Luckily fees are extremely low, with a yearly membership costing just 20 dollars per person, or 40 dollars per family. “We’re very cost-effective because we don’t want to drive anyone away from our sport,” mentioned the Tennis Club’s Secretary/Treasurer. “We think everyone should be able to play tennis if they want to, so we don’t want to charge too much.”
