Three days this week, the Gallagher Centre is the host of the Standards Track Meet, put on by the Good Spirit School Division. Students compete against themselves from 9:30-2 p.m., each day of the meet, said GSSD employee Jason Trost.

There are as many as 700 people in the Gallagher Centre Monday through to today.

Schools involved in competition include: Yorkdale Central, Columbia, MC Knoll, Churchbridge, Dr. Brass and other area schools.

"Since this is the third annual track meet, students are becoming familiar with the event," Trost insisted upon the finish of Monday's events.

They include: high jump, long jump, the 50-metre relay, 600-metre relay and shot put.

"This type of event fits in with the school physical education programming and provides the students with their first official introduction to track and field events in a competitive format," states David Baron, chairman of the meet.

The runs are a good way to spark interest in physical activity at a young age.

"This is a good way to peak their interest in exercise and and get them involved in a sports discipline," he continued to explain.

For the students in Gr. 4-6, they all compete against their gender and grade level, he said.

The event is assisted by many people throughout the three days of the meet, anyone from current students to retired teachers.

"High school students from around the Division help out," said Trost.

Baron said the Standards meet is also a joint effort of a lot of people in and around the GSSD.

"This will see the collaborative efforts of teachers and staff from throughout the division."

Some of the group includes: Trost, Mark Schendel, David Baron, Withman Jaigobin, Alisa Leidl, Candace Baron, Bret McDowell, Benson McDowell, Curtis Spelay, Laurie Antonichuck, Nicole Clark and Brent Zapshala.

The top six finishers in their respective events compete in the GSSD Showcase meet on April. 15.
