A seemingly large group of staff and students from the Regional High School in Yorkton are anxiously looking forward to this year's Walk and Roll, an initiative which they are hoping will catch on like a major flu epidemic.

Led by staff member Roby Sharpe and Gr. 12 student Jennifer Hudye, they are promoting the notion of leaving the car at home and walking to one's destination. On Wednesday, June 1, they are hoping people everywhere will follow their lead.

The YRHS wishes to invite everyone in the Good Spirit School Division and in the City of Yorkton to participate in the 5th Annual Walk and Roll.

With the increasing cost of vehicle transportation their heads are in the right place.

"Gas prices are so high," says Hudye. "We had to come up with an alternative."

The goal is to actively support healthy living through daily exercise, including walking, running, jogging, bicycling or rollerblading.

This project has been spearheaded by Sharpe, Mr. Tkachuk and Mr. Variyan. Hudye says she enjoys taking on projects such as this and clearly hopes to see an empty parking lots all over the City all day June 1.

"I enjoy doing things like this. Getting awareness out there and getting everyone involved."

She said there's no set course for Walk or Roll and there's no race involved. Both she and Sharpe were also talking about making it a dress-down day as well.

All staff and students are encouraged to take part and choose active living transportation as their means of getting to school/work. Walking, running or riding has the following benefits: moderate physical activity reduces the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke, increase self esteem and promotes a good sense of well being.

Also, extra added incentive, participants within the Good Spirit School Division will have a chance to win a brand new mountain bike (courtesy of the GSSD) .
