Father’s Day proved a good day for the Yorkton Cardinals as they earned a home field win over Regina in Western Major Baseball League action.
Yorkton took a lead with one in the third, only to fall behind as Regina scored two in both the fifth and sixth innings.
The Cardinals would then roll up three runs in the home half of the sixth to knot the game 4-4.
Yorkton added one in the seventh, and two in the eighth to win 7-4.
Richard England would start on the mound for Yorkton. He would toss 4.2 innings allowing these hits, two runs, both earned while walking five and striking out eight, but he would not be around for the decision.
The win would go to Trevor Wallace, the fourth of five Cardinals pitchers. He would throw one scoreless inning, allowing two hits.
Austin Douglas earned a two-inning save.
Ben Schanding had a three-hit night for the Cards on offence.
The win was the Cards third straight, raising Yorkton’s record to 9-8, and a .529 winning percentage, leaving them in third spot in the WMBL Eastern Division, three games back of Swift Current and a game in arrears to Regina.
Weyburn are fourth in the East 3.5 back, with Melville 5.5 off-the-pace, with Moose Jaw in the basement 8-back.
Win over Beavers
Yorkton were in Weyburn Saturday, taking the lead with two runs in the third.
The Beavers cut the lead in half with a run in the third.
The Cardinals scored three in the fifth to go ahead 5-1.
Weyburn chipped away on the lead scoring single runs in the sixth and seventh.
In the eighth Yorkton had plated seven runs to take a 12-3 lead before the rains came. The game would eventually be called reverting the score after seven complete with Yorkton the 5-3 victors.
Cory Cantebury had two hits, and two runs-batted-in to lead the offence.
Justin Johnston started the game for Yorkton going 6.2 innings scattering six hits, and three runs, all earned while striking out five for the win.
Max Biedrzycki threw a third of an inning for the save.
Rocking it
The Melville Millionaires rolled into Yorkton Friday and Cardinal pitcher Kody Rock shut them out.
Rock would toss a complete game scattering six hits, no runs, and striking out six.
On offence Yorkton scored a single run in the bottom of the first inning, the eventual game-winner, then added one in the second, and two in the eighth for a 4-0 win.
Chance Wheatly had a three-hit night, and a run-batted-in for the home side.
Swift thrashing
Wednesday the Indians jumped all over the Cardinals.
Swift Current scored four in the home half of the first, added one in the second, and two in the sixth to lead 7-0 before the Cardinals finally scored one in the eighth. It would be Yorkton’s only run as the Indians added three in their half of the eighth for a 10-1 win.
Gavin Collins started the game on the mound for Yorkton, being tagged with the loss based on 5.1 innings work in which he allowed none hits, and gave up seven runs, all of those earned, while striking out only two.
On offence the Cardinals were held to only three hits, but would leave none on-base as the Indians issued five walks.
A night later the Cardinals would get off to a much better start in Swift Current, scoring two in the first inning on a two-run homer by Cory Cantebury, and four in the second to take a 6-0 lead.
The Indians would chip into the lead with two in the third, three in the fifth, then knotting the score with a run in the seventh.
Swift Current’s comeback would be complete with one in the ninth for the 7-6 win.
Luke Lucas started the game for the Cardinals on the hill, tossing five innings, allowing nine hits and five runs, all of them earned, but he would not be around for the decision.
Spencer Jackson would start the ninth for Yorkton, hitting the first batter.
Trevor Wallace would be called from the bullpen, allow a double, and being tagged for the loss, although Austin Douglas would be on the mound, hitting the first batter he faced to load the bases. He would them record a strikeout for the first out of the ninth, before giving up a single to centre to score the game-winning run.

The Cardinals will host Weyburn tonight (Wednesday), at Jubilee Park, with Moose Jaw here Thursday and Regina Friday.
Yorkton heads to Weyburn for action Saturday.
Then it’s back to Jubilee Park to host Medicine Monday and Tuesday.
