YORKTON -  It was a huge win for the Yorkton Regional High School girl’s soccer team.

The Lady Raiders were up against Swift Current Thursday in the MJHSAA Soccer League action.

Swift Current has proven to be a juggernaut in the six-team MJHSAA having won the league title every year for the last twelve or so years, explained YRHS coach Michael Chapman.

“Our girls joined the league two years ago, and each year we have made the final against Swift and lost,” said Chapman.

“In fact, Swift also plays in our region for provincial qualifiers and last year beat us in the regional final to make us the two-seed from the south at provincials.

“Then, they beat us in the consolation finals at provincials as well.

“They literally ended every aspect of our season last year and we met often.

“They are an excellent team and in my entire tenure as head coach at YRHS (nine-years) we have never beaten them.”

Thursday, that changed.

“Our girls got off to a one nothing lead after three-minutes of play, and by the 10th minute had made it 3 – 0,” said Chapman. Swift altered their style of play at that point to be more defensive, but by then it was already too late.

The YRHS girls locked it down and played a strong game start to finish to win 4-1, said their coach.

It was a massive win for us and we were pretty pumped about it,” he said, adding “it (the win), puts our girls in sole possession of first place in the Moose Jaw League and solidifies our position as serious contenders for a provincial medal this year.”
