Dear Editor:

It recently came to my attention that the choir program at the Regional High School has been cancelled.

If that is the case, I’m in shock.

I am also very biased.

Music changed my life... period!

I’m Alvin Law and if you don’t know who that is, no problem. If you do, you get it. After being born without arms in Yorkton in 1960, given up for adoption at a week old and then taken home and raised by Jack and Hilda Law, a life void of anything meaningful as predicted by the “experts” was completely turned upside down.

Life in Yorkton played a huge role.

Many would remember my playing trombone in the band or the drums.

Some might even remember me tap dancing on “Profile”.

But it actually all started with singing. “You Are My Sunshine” on stage at the Legion Hall when I was three.

Church Choir at St. Andrews. Myrna McClary in Junior High, and Dave Bray at the Regional. Oh for the “Good Old Days”, huh?

I’m sure there are very complex reasons but bean counters have ruined our world!

That’s what we hear, right?

Budget cuts. What a pathetic excuse.

I was raised to believe “There’s No Such Word As Can’t”.

Too bad those in charge of education in Yorkton and Saskatchewan have given up.

In my home, that would have been unacceptable!

The “experts” say it’s about low numbers and education is for the majority.

Really?

How many students are in sports at school compared to the majority who aren’t?

Why aren’t sports programs being cut?

The Arts have been a target of bean counters for decades and I find that particularly offensive.

Sharpen your pencils, roll up your sleeves and change the decision.

This isn’t about me. I live in Calgary.

But I still carry Yorkton in my heart.

Please don’t break it!
