A young man going to university in Calgary and playing hockey there has had his request granted to delay reporting to jail after being found guilty of sexual interference of a 13-year-old girl. He was sentenced to 90-days, but it’s okay for him to finish his studies. This case has dragged through the courts for upwards of three years with many adjournments, some of which were because the accused was busy playing hockey in another city. Other times he had exams or was busy studying. Eventually, we are going to see someone in their mid-20’s kill another person and then not have to report to jail until he becomes a senior citizen because there is still plenty of life to live beforehand. I also love this term of ‘reporting’ to jail. Like it’s voluntary. “Oh, shoot, I still need to find time to get to jail and do that 3 year sentence I got for break and enter.”
The story gets even more ridiculous. Now, the University of Calgary has advised him to stay away from campus this term. They, apparently, don’t have grounds to actually expel him. The education system works about as well as the legal system. The man committed the offenses before he was a student at Calgary, so that technicality prevents the school from getting rid of him. Best to put the rest of the students at risk then and keep your technicalities in check. Note - offense occurred before he was a student, but if they expelled him and he was found not guilty, then there’d be major problems.
A pub in Hamilton has changed its name from Sir John’s to something else because patrons felt unsafe. You can’t make this up. Apparently, our first Prime Minister’s involvement with residential schools back in 1867 has caused many, who go for a drink, to feel like their lives are in danger in 2018 by sitting in this establishment.
I was going to write a whole bunch on Justin Trudeau having a private meeting with Josh Boyle before Christmas and why that’s grounds for Trudeau’s dismissal, but I’ve decided against it. Those who support Trudeau will support him all the way to the end of the flat Earth no matter what I write. Those who don’t support him, surely, don’t need more reasons not to. The guy is a colossal failure and if Stephen Harper left behind a trail of sloppiness, incompetence, and corruptness like Trudeau has; he would have already been ousted somehow. Instead, Trudeau looks primed for a win in 2019. I don’t get Canadians.
One final thought on last week’s column surrounding the minimum wage increase and the misleading notion that by paying your lowest earners more money is good for the economy: let’s pretend a business owner has $10 and his minimum wage worker has $2. The employee gets a raise to $3, so now the business owner has $9. Before the raise, between the two of them, there was $12 being contributed to the economy. After the raise, there is $12 being contributed to the economy. Chew on that for a bit. Let’s also not forget those who make more than minimum wage and they don’t get the mandated increase, so everyone who makes more than minimum wage gets that much closer to being near the bottom of the pay scale while costs for things go up. Having more people near the bottom is great for communist rule. Communist rule is something admired by our federal government. I’d also like to remind those who think communism is a great idea because everyone is equal, that it’s not. Read last week’s column as to why, if you still can’t figure it out.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have a bye week, which, for those unfamiliar with sports, means they have 6 days off and can take a holiday away from hockey. Leaf management has decided to put the screws to a pair of their players (Travis Dermott and Frederic Gauthier) by sending them to the minors for 6 days instead. This means no holiday. They’ll be recalled to the Leafs at the end of the 6 days. I don’t care what you tell me, there is no way of convincing me that 6 more days in the minors will make these two infinitely better. In fact, many have told me that a player like Dermott needs to play as much as possible, so it’s key to have him back in the AHL. Well, if that was the case, Dermott shouldn’t have been a healthy scratch in the Leafs’ final game before this break. Someone else tried to say the Leafs care about their AHL team and want it to get a couple of wins. Well, then send Auston Matthews to the minors.
Johnny Manziel wants upwards of $500,000 to play for the Hamilton Ti-Cats. Yes, it’s an outrageous request. But, I want to watch him play in the CFL. I hope someone pays the guy. The league could also use the exposure south of the border. I know ‘little man syndrome’ CFL fans think the NFL isn’t better, but it is. If Manziel can turn his football career around, it opens the door to more players using the CFL as a springboard to get back to the NFL. This only makes the CFL better.
Nice person mentions to: Jennifer Chant, Mark Butchko, Carrie Morrison, Keri Zawada, and Dominique Hayden.
