There’s no better time than today to start working on your family tree! The Yorkton branch of the Saskatchewan Genealogical Society will be meeting on Tuesday, April 10 at 7:00 PM at the Yorkton Public Library. Special guests Virginia Kaczur and Lillian Tuttosi will be on hand to share their experiences of compiling a family history book. This will be a fascinating and educational genealogy session. Interested genealogists are welcome!
If you are planning to be in Saskatoon at the end of April, you might want to take part in the Saskatchewan Genealogical Society (SGS) 2018 conference, hosted by the Saskatoon Branch. The conference is entitled “Your Family History: Finding and Assembling the Pieces” at the Park Town Hotel in Saskatoon, April 20-22, 2018. You can find out about the many interesting sessions by visiting the SGS site at www.saskgenealogy.com; click on the “education” tab, then click on “2018 conference”. Sessions include “Brick Walls, Breakthroughs and Bridges”, about issues and circumstances that help and hinder research; “How Do I Prove It?” on how to prove ancestry using the Genealogical Proof Standard; “Right Forest, Wrong Tree”, talking about analysis and interpretation of documentation to move research forward; and “Why Write Your Family History”, because, as the description says “it is never too soon to start writing your family story, but it may be too late.”
There will also be a session on genealogical resources at the provincial archives of Saskatchewan. The SGS site has a registration form on line. Or, if you have any questions, contact them by email ([email protected]) or by calling Linda at 1-306-221-2178.
When you’re on the SGS site, be sure to click on the “education” tab, then click on “2018 Salt Lake City Trip” for full details on a bus trip to Salt Lake City with the Medicine Hat Genealogical Society and the SGS. This trip, May 27 to June 3, 2018, will give you six full days to research millions of free-to-access materials. Registration is limited so if you would like to be part of this trip, please register as soon as possible.
Genealogy research starts small, and expands into a larger and longer project than you ever imagined. It may begin by listing grandparents, aunts and uncles, but then, if you’re lucky, carries on into the next generation, and by then you’re determined to find out more and more. By learning about the everyday lives of ancestors, they cease being just names and dates on a page and become real people. When researching or talking to relatives, be sure to go beyond just names and dates. Write down any remembrances: funny stories, sad stories, family traditions, even details of what their first house looked like or remembrances of their first seasons in their new home.
It is never too soon to begin. Time marches on and where once there was an abundance of grandparents, aunts and uncles, there are suddenly none, and your information sources are gone. Kick-start your family tree projects with resources like the Yorkton branch of the SGS, and various SGS events in the province. New members are always welcome!
