You are invited! Please join us for the Yorkton and District Horticultural Society’s annual “Fruit, Flower and Vegetable Show” on Wednesday, August 10 from 1:00 p.m. till 5:00 p.m. at St. Gerard’s Parish Complex. Have coffee, and browse through the beautiful displays and exhibits.
See veggies, cut flowers, fruit, flower arrangements, and planter arrangements. Horticultural group members will be on hand and eager to show you what their hard work in the garden has accomplished this year, and seeing lovely plants and flowers is a great way to spend the afternoon! Your admission includes coffee or tea and dainties! Please plan to join us! Bring a friend, (or two or three!). Everyone is welcome!
It’s a lot of fun to put on a horticultural show, but it is also a lot of hard work. Vegetable and fruit entries have to be picked, sometimes just that morning, so that you are seeing them at their peak of freshness and beauty. Floral arrangements have to be made at the last possible moment, and then carried very carefully to the hall! Planters, which likely have been pampered all summer, need one final cleaning, pinching and dead-heading before they head off to the show, complete with interesting plant stands and unique props that help enhance the beautiful displays.
Meanwhile, there is a hard-working team at the hall, setting the tables, preparing the display area with markers and dividers, and of course, arranging all the goodie trays for our guests to enjoy with their coffee and tea!
It is all a process that takes time and effort, but one that is so rewarding when you, our gardening friends, come in and enjoy seeing the fruits (and veggies!) of our labor! It is a pleasure to sit and have coffee with you all and hear about your own gardening projects! It is also a special feeling to be continuing a tradition that began in Yorkton at City Hall on September 7, 1906: the date of the first flower show of a “budding”, fledgling horticultural society.
So we really hope that you will join us at the show on Wednesday, August 10! Stop in for a quick cup of coffee and a meander through the exhibits, or come for a longer visit. Either way, we will be delighted to see you!
The horticultural society has evolved many times over in all those years from the very first show, moving from being a group primarily comprised of farm wives with huge gardens to its current form, with members (men and women) who share an interest in gardening and horticulture. Most have average-sized gardens; some have no gardens but landscaped yards; some have planters on decks or balconies; and some have their “garden” in planters by their back door. It makes no difference: the common bond is an interest in gardening, and the desire to learn more about it. As my Great-Grammie and my sweet Mom always said, you never stop learning! And that’s what keeps you young and vital.
And now we have taken the next step in moving forward with the introduction of our website. You can log on to www.yorktonhort.ca and see what is coming up with the group, as well as finding practical information on various topics. We keep growing in new directions to accommodate the new directions of gardening. Maybe when our meeting begin in the fall you can come and see what we are doing! New members are always welcome!
Have a great week, and be sure to wear a hat and sunscreen! See you at the show!
