Staff and students have been having a very busy and eventful spring season. The Invermay SADD group participated in the Provincial Impaired Driving Awareness Week held from March 7 to March 11.

The first day of the awareness week was Mocktail Monday, where “mocktails” were served to all staff and students to promote non-alcoholic beverages. On Tragic Tuesday the SADD group brought the point home about the number of deaths occurring due to distracted driving. Every 20 minutes a student’s name from grades 6-12 was called over the intercom. The student had a white plastic bag placed on him or her to show that he or she had “passed away,” and couldn’t communicate with anyone.

March 9 was White Wednesday, when all staff and students wore white to represent the number of individuals who have been involved in vehicle accidents related to impaired or distracted driving.

The next day was Taco Thursday, when the SADD group held a taco-in-a-bag sale at noon. On Fruity Friday SADD members handed out delicious fresh fruit cups and juice to all students and staff to promote healthy eating and drinking.

On April 11 the SCC held After School Klub activities. Students enjoyed decorating plant pots, and had fun getting messy while icing cupcakes!

Orrie Babichuk attended the Skills Canada Saskatchewan competition in Regina from April 21 to 22. He competed in the Outdoor Power and Recreation Mechanics category, and earned a gold medal. He competed against 12 other students from across the province in both a written test and a handson component. Orrie will be competing in the National competition held in Moncton, N.B. from June 5 to 8. We wish him luck and know he will do a great job representing Invermay School.

The junior and senior badminton teams have had great seasons and lots of fun. The juniors attended many games and tournaments, playing teams from Wadena, Canora, Melville, St. Henry, Sacred Heart, Grayson, Ituna, Kamsack, Keeseekoose and Sturgis. Skylar Wallin, Brayden Serron, Peyton Shewchuk, AJ Juaneza, Natasha Fey, Kyra Fogg, and Tristen Maier all had first-place finishes at predistricts, advancing them to Districts in Yorkton.

Congratulations to Skylar Wallin who placed first in boys singles and to Natasha Fey and AJ Juaneza who won the gold in girls doubles. The senior badminton team also had a very eventful season, playing games and tournaments in Kamsack, Melville, Preeceville, and Sturgis. The team attended districts on April 27 when Megan Steranka and Samantha Wallin placed third in girls doubles.

The Red Cross group put on a spirit week from May 2 to 6 to raise funds for the recent earthquake victims of Ecuador. Each day was a themed dress-up day, and there were also food sales throughout the week. Monday, May 2 was Pajama Day and Muffin Monday when staff and students wore their comfiest PJs to school, and enjoyed the delicious muffins and juice sold.

The next day was Crazy Colour Combo Day, so everyone mixed and matched their wacky colours. Wednesday was Twin Day, and there was also an ice-cream float sale held at noon. Students dressed up as twins with a friend, and enjoyed the tasty floats.

On Throwback Thursday, staff and students dressed up as people from past decades. Friday was Jersey/Athlete Day, and there was a piz za sale at noon. Students wore their favourite jerseys, or they dressed up as a player from a sport.

On May 6, students in grades 11 and 12 attended the MoneySense$ presentation hosted by the Crossroads Credit Union at the Canora Composite School. All of the students enjoyed the presentation and learned lots about how to deal with their finances and discussed future issues that they may encounter.

On May 10, the SCC had a complementary hot lunch of waffles and sausage for all staff and students.
