Letter to the Editor - Sad school rinks gone

Dear Editor:

A few days ago I was working on the roof at a school and I looked down to see a skating rink full of snow. I asked a school employee, "Haven't you made ice yet?" He explained that the kids don't use the rink anymore because they are apparently too busy doing activities inside. What a shame.

After checking around I found that rinks at schools seem to be a thing of the past. I remember growing up, waiting for the first snow, so we could go outside and pack and flood the school rink. We kids lived at our school rink in the lunch hour, physical education class, evening skates, playing hockey, shinny, school races and inter-school hockey. It was a blast! Our school rink covered one of the school's four ball diamonds, and part of our football and soccer areas.

The outdoor rink provided hours of fun and friendship and I'm sorry to see them go! But, I am sure thankful for Xbox and Nintendo etc., so the children of today do not have to put up with the hardships that we had to. All that skating, hockey, curling, and ball, and endless evenings and weekends of fun!
