Dear Editor:
I’d like to respond to an article in the Yorkton This Week on June 29 about the Yorkton Terriers.
I have been a season ticket holder for over 50 years and have not missed many games until recently. I think that the comments made that the reason why the more elder people are not coming is due to difficulty in the winter would be an easy excuse.
My reasoning, and others, for starting to not attend the games would include the fact that the music that is being played is way too loud for the older generation. I myself and others have continued to complain about this and there has never been a response. I think, people have to remember that because of this older generation that still want to come to the Terrier games, most of them now are hard of hearing and have hearing aids. This excessive loud music makes it very uncomfortable to be there, but also makes it difficult to socialize.
I can remember when I had my own business and some of my customers would come in. We would discuss the Terriers and why they would not be at the games anymore. There most common response would simply be the music was way too loud! I understand that the goal you are trying to accomplish is to get the younger generations out to the games to support the Terriers, but I think we are forgetting that Yorkton is an older generation Town, and that this older generation has stood behind the Terriers for many years. There can be different ways to accomplish the attendance of the younger generations.
One other statement I’d like to comment on is with regards to Don Chesney. In my opinion, Don was one of the greatest ambassadors to hockey in Yorkton, as a coach, for marketing, scouting and as a general manager. In our opinion Don did more for Yorkton and the Terriers throughout his time here, and his reasons for leaving could have been avoided.
I wish Don all the luck in his new position with the Portage Manitoba Terriers. They will greatly benefit by having Don behind them. Good luck Don. And I still continue to be a Yorkton Terrier Fan and season ticket holder even though I may not be attending many games because of this.
