Joe Jackson – Fast Forward
Every time I see a new Joe Jackson release, I think, well, what will this one sound like? He has taken us on many varied ambitious musical journeys over the years, starting with the “angry at the world” first couple of albums. Then bouncing from classical, big band and then settling in on the piano infused grumpy melodic musical soup of today. This brings us to ‘Fast Forward”, Jackson’s first collection of new songs since 2008.
Recorded in four cities, New York, Amsterdam, Berlin and New Orleans, with varied supply of musicians, “Fast Forward” still maintains complete cohesiveness throughout the 16-song excursion.
The title track smells a bit of the ‘Night and Day” era with its poignant piano and stunning lyrics. The violin contribution by Regina Carter adds a nice touch.
Of the New York recorded tunes, the cover of Television’s “See No Evil” is a standout for me.
‘A Little Smile” with its slight hint of pop sound and “So You Say” a smooth jazz number are at the top of the crop from the Amsterdam recorded songs.
In Berlin the songs take on a Steely Dan flavour. I love Steely Dan so they appeal to my pallet just fine.
“Junkie Diva” and “Good Bye Jonny” are the most delicious morsels here.
All of the musicians on this album brilliantly accompany Jackson as he rolls out some lyrics with the bite of a defiant teenager. Some of his best are included here.
In New Orleans it must be the law to require a horn section in every recording studio. It’s Title 19 of the Louisiana State Legislature if memory serves.
“Satellite” conforms diligently with the law and provides that New Orleans sound that will take your mind on a virtual tour of Bourbon Street.
The final two songs “Keep On Dreaming” and “Ode To Joy”, are my favorites of the disc. Save the best for last why don’t you Jackson?
At the age of 61, Joe Jackson proves he can still deliver intelligently crafted music like a fast speeding, bass thumping Civic driving pizza deliveryman.
“Fast Forward” is one of those albums that tend to improve after multiple listens. That’s what I recommend you do. Sit back, put the needle down on your desired choice of media, and chill.
I say this is some good old grown up music, or as my kids call it, “Dad Rock”. I don’t care, if this is “Dad Rock”, so be it. I’m ok with that.
