As Canada becomes more and more infected with the politically correct, I have found myself sitting back and really paying attention to the outcome of special interest groups offending other special interest groups. How do you handle something that offends someone who isn’t a white English speaking male? There was a situation in Toronto where a professional woman had her day ruined by a polite Muslim man who entered a room and shook hands with the other men around the table, but refused to do so with the woman, stating religious reasons. The woman admits the Muslim man was, otherwise, very polite and she had no other beef with him. Still, his refusal to shake her hand was deemed to be (by her) as a statement that she was less of a person because she’s female. Whose rights are superior here? Well, the answer is that we put the screws to the group who isn’t offended by anything once again as the proper protocol would be to refuse shaking everyone’s hand. The Muslim man is supposed to announce he can’t shake the woman’s hand for religious reasons but he recognizes her as an equal so therefore there will be no hand shaking whatsoever. Wonderful.
I don’t mean to come off crass, but this issue of a Burkini ban in France is silly. Look, I don’t care what you wear to the beach. The reality, however, is that if you are not in swim gear you look dumb. That applies to burkinis, traditional nun outfits (I don’t even know what they are called), or dopes who show up and lay on a towel while wearing their jean jacket. It all looks silly. Yes, we all have rights and that includes the right to look dumb.
I’m going to need some help understanding, but I have a difficult time rationalizing how a Muslim woman is allowed to wear a hijab while in the workforce as a police officer. It is now allowed for Muslim Canadian women to be cops and wear a hijab while doing so. While I guess this is okay, I am wondering how it’s determined which beliefs you adhere to and which ones you disregard. To me, if a Muslim woman insists on being an RCMP officer and wants to wear a hijab then I’m to assume she’s a strict practicing religious person who obeys what is preached to the letter of the law. Now, I stand to be corrected on this, but in some of the research I’ve done I have also come across rules that say a Muslim woman should dress conservatively. Well, the RCMP uniform can be quite form fitting and reveal our bodily assets. I’ve also read that a woman should not talk in a sweet voice that could tempt a man into sin. So, I’m suspecting this tactic of being friendly to get a criminal to admit to his crimes is not an option. I also read a woman isn’t supposed to seek advice from non-Muslim men or insist on being in an environment where the majority of the men are not Muslim. Again, the one thing I have found when it comes to Islam is that there are a ton of interpretations out there so maybe some of what I’m saying is wrong. But, it is confusing to me. Why dig your heels in over the hijab, but not worry about a lot of the other things?
I know it seems like I’m picking on the religion, but I can recall growing up in a house where my mom was a strict Protestant. She believed listening to rock music was a sin. Wearing earrings was a sin. Dancing was a sin. Working on Sunday was considered a sin too, but you can bet if she refused to do so that it wouldn’t be long before her employer found a reason to have her released from her job and there would be no recourse.
San Francisco 49ers quarterback (hopefully soon to be ex-San Francisco quarterback) Colin Kaepernick refused to stand for the national anthem on Friday night and he says he will continue to sit during the anthem as a show of support for those who do not receive freedom, liberty, and justice. While some have criticized Kaepernick, there is a left wing opinion that Kaepernick should be commended for his stand. Let’s not forget, however, that Tim Tebow was just about, universally, condemned for saying a prayer before games. And, let’s not forget that while the St. Louis Rams were not penalized for their “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot” pose to support Black Lives Matter, the Dallas Cowboys have had their request to pay homage to slain police officers refused by the NFL. Yes, the politically correct left wing have taken over professional sports now too.
I’d like to end this week by saying Thanks to the City Of Yorkton for their efforts this summer on improving our streets. To the people whining about how hard it is to navigate around the construction, I have no sympathy for you. I’m happy work is being done and I hope it continues for a few more summers as we try and get caught up on this impossible task.
