Stackhouse Soapbox - Time to close public washrooms

This, seemingly, never ending issue about which bathroom transgender people (actually, there is a new term now called ‘gender reassignment’ because we want to be as least offensive as, humanly, possible) are allowed to use has resulted in me calling

This, seemingly, never ending issue about which bathroom transgender people (actually, there is a new term now called ‘gender reassignment’ because we want to be as least offensive as, humanly, possible) are allowed to use has resulted in me calling for a solution that has not been discussed:  close off all public washrooms to the general public. The system is broken.  It’s time to just put up a sheet of drywall over the bathroom door and put a bunch of port-a-potties in parking lots for folks to use. I really don’t have much of an opinion on the matter myself as I have used public washrooms a lot in my life and, to my knowledge, I don’t think I’ve ever seen another person’s private parts in there. I’ve even been to rock concerts and other very busy places where a woman, who has a great emergency, has entered a man’s washroom because the line moves much quicker than the ladies. The woman was never harassed and, in fact, pretty much ignored by the males in there.  You notice it because it’s not something you see every day. But, that’s about it. I can’t say the same standard would apply if a man entered a woman’s bathroom. So, we already are under a double standard. The reality is that if this is an issue that consumes us for more than a couple of seconds, we have big, big problems and it’s time to just lock the doors and tell people to pee before they go shopping.

Something that isn’t getting much play in the news is a bill that was introduced by a retiring senator that would ban all firearms from people’s homes. Former Dauphin area MP Inky Mark claims the bill states that all semi-automatic guns would be banned entirely and hunting rifles or guns used at a range would have to be stored at a neutral facility and if you want to use them, an officer would transport it for you to the place in question. The senator is retiring and it’s not clear if the Liberals will get behind this or not. But, it’s something worth watching as there are many people in Saskatchewan who own firearms and it would affect those folks.

Whatever happened to the suggestion that show homes would not be built on Broadway Street (downtown Yorkton) and we would have a display of beautiful scenery? All I’m noticing is a lumber yard with a house being built in front of it and a considerable amount of garbage being blown about. I don’t blame the business at all. I lay everything at the feet of the City. They have not enforced what they said was going to happen and, what’s worse, was I never once expected them to.  At worst, they’ve been dishonest right from the very beginning when they announced 7th Ave was closing. At best, they have been neglectful.  Neither is a good position. Enough time has passed that we should see the final outcome of what was proposed and accepted by our law makers.

Oil prices are inching their way back up and so, too, is the Canadian dollar. I’ll be interested to see if Justin Trudeau tries to take credit for this as he has worked hard to stymy the energy sector with his goofy environmental philosophies. Make no mistake about it. The price of oil (which doesn’t reflect how Canada is doing as it’s a worldwide commodity) is responsible for the Canadian dollar going back up, but the American dollar is also not doing as well against other currencies and that helps Canada too. This has nothing to do with Trudeau. I don’t like to sound uncaring, but what Canada does on the environmental front has zero impact as far as the world is concerned. We are an, incredibly, small player in this. Trudeau is also a big, personal, contributor to what he opposes when you look at his air miles in the last six months, amongst other things.

The Toronto Maple Leafs won the NHL Draft Lottery on Saturday and you would think that the playoffs were over. I counted fourteen Sportsnet stories about the Leafs winning the lottery and/or Auston Matthews (the consensus number one pick of the draft) and no mention of the two playoff games being played that night.  And, they wonder why ratings are down?

Rogers also looks incredibly amateurish at the moment with the coverage of the NHL playoffs. They have four national play by play broadcast teams and there are four series remaining, yet Canadians are subjected to American feeds in two of the four instances.  What makes this even more embarrassing, in my opinion, for Rogers is that NBC uses TSN (Rogers main competition) talent to do their games. So, here we have Rogers using voices from their opposition in their broadcasts. What’s even worse for them, is that I have seen many comments from people who don’t mind this at all as they see people like Mike Emrick, Gord Miller, and John Forslund as being an upgrade over what Rogers uses as their own employees. Ouch.

Nice people mention:  Brittainy Spence, Devon Lowenberg, Christina Elmy, and Shawn Markwart.
