Searching out podcasts and web comics and the like is a bit like being in a huge labyrinth with the lights out. You can stumble around for literally hours doing Internet searches and following threads basically hoping to find a golden nugget.

Frankly, most of the time the sparkle you see in the shadows and flick to for a closer look usually ends up being fool’s gold.

But then once in a while you turn a cyber corner and right there in front of you is a real gem, something you can settle into and enjoy as a regular part of your entertainment.

One of those gems is the Cool Canadian History podcast.

Back a half a lifetime ago my favourite subject in school was history. In part because of teacher Ted Degenstein who taught the subject from Grade 7 to 12, and partly because what has occurred in our collective past fascinates me. I suppose I am one of those who buys’ solidly into the old adage ‘those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.”

I am also proudly Canadian, and believe we have a unique and fascinating history of our own which we should be more aware of.

Then I find the Cool Canadian History podcast, which seems to be ideal to feed my interest in history, and more specifically Canadian history.

The topics covered are interesting. Recent ones have included;

• Behind Barbed Wire: Ukrainian Internment during the First World War

• The Pemmican War – The Rivalry for the Northwest Territories

• Canadian Comics and the Second World War Effort

The show, which dates back to 2016, is hosted by Dave Borys and he does a great job of telling the stories of our past, often drawing on the stories which aren’t necessarily part of the usual history books. That is another element which makes the show compelling, its willingness to go off the well-beaten path of history.
