Dear Editor:

A number of letters of concern about the elimination of the Yorkton Regional High School choir program were published in the August 24, 2016 edition of your paper.

I believe these concerns were unfairly directed at the Good Spirit School Division.

Perhaps some background would be helpful here. The teacher’s salary contract was negotiated by the provincial government before the April election. The government could have, but chose not to bring down a budget prior to the election, presumably because it would be a “bad news” budget.

Then, on June 14, 2016 it was reported that the provincial government was reneging on half of the 1.9% teacher salary increase it had negotiated when the school boards were already part way into their fiscal year.

What were the school boards to do? There certainly would have to be negative consequences from such a decision.  Where were the letters of concern at the time of that decision?

My suggestion is that the criticisms would be more fairly directed to the Wall government.
