PREECEVILLE — The Peewee and Junior football program kicked off in Preeceville on May 4, with players from Grades 4 to 6 in the Peewee division and students from Grades 6 and 7 in the Junior program. Players from Preeceville, Sturgis, Norquay and Invermay came together with the same goal: to learn, have fun and get active.
Practices are scheduled for Wednesdays and Fridays after school on the Preeceville School football field. Since the first session, coaches Kim Moekerk, James Dodge and Jeremy Mattison said they are excited and proud of how the team has progressed. The young players have evolved into focused, determined athletes who have put pride and heart into the game.
The full-contact program focuses on developing players by teaching fundamentals, building skills, fostering teamwork and creating a sense of brotherhood that can last a lifetime.
The spring camp is open to anyone from Grades 4 to 8 and currently includes players from Sturgis, Preeceville, Norquay and Invermay.
“Anybody is welcome. Gender and physical condition are irrelevant. We just want to spread the love of the game, and we are truthfully and faithfully all-inclusive,” said Kim Moekerk.
“We all love what we do and would love to secure a healthy program for the area that doesn’t get overlooked. Football doesn’t discriminate and is open to anyone, even if they are not registered in school and have chosen to be home-schooled instead."
She noted that while the only professional team in Saskatchewan is in football, local schools do not have full nine- or 12-player teams, so they will continue to advocate for their six-player league.
“There’s a spot for everybody, and this is what I personally love. Our teams are protective of each other. We have fast and agile kids, while others are strong and unrelentingly protective. No other sport offers this,” she said.
However, Moekerk emphasized the need for funding, especially for new helmets, and said they will be launching fundraising efforts.
“We are looking forward to a successful spring camp and a great season,” she concluded.
