Sturgis graduates honoured with awards

Life -time achievements focus for graduates.

STURGIS — The Sturgis Composite School acknowledged graduates with numerous awards during its graduation ceremony held in the Sturgis Regional Park on June 24.

Kelsey Newman and Kristen Peterson presented the awards with assistance from Kipp Bayer, principal.

The Academic Awards were given to graduates who have achieved an 80 per cent or higher average in grades 10, 11, and 12.

Sierra Karcha achieved an 80.1 per cent average overall.

Allison Peterson achieved an 81.6 per cent average in grades 10, 11 and 12.

Nolan Westermann received an academic award with an 81.6 per cent average.

Alexis Vidomski achieved an 82.6 per cent average in grades 10, 11, and 12.

Seth Hort received an academic award with an 82.9 per cent average.

Brett Smith achieved an overall average of 84.6 per cent.

Daniell Mirva received an academic award with an overall average of 88.1 per cent in grades 10, 11 and 12.

Paige Hansen received an academic award with a 90.3 per cent average.

Camron Secundiak achieved an overall average of 91.3 per cent in grades 10, 11 and 12.

Brynn Babiuk received this academic award with a 91.7 per cent average.

Danika Soltys received an academic award with a 92.1 per cent average overall.

Denzel Vargas received an academic award with a 92.4 per cent average through grades 10, 11 and 12.

Kylie Babiuk received an academic award with a 92.9 per cent average.

Austin Fedorchuk was the top graduate for 2022 with the top average of 93.6 per cent.

Next on the program was the presentations of awards and scholarships.

The Male Athlete Award for 2022 goes to two very deserving graduates. These two athletes have been involved in most of the sports teams our school has to offer. They are leaders on their teams and went to provincials three times this year, walking away with bronze in volleyball, silver in basketball, and just this past weekend a silver in lacrosse. Although different in their leadership qualities, one being more of the voice and the other being more of the silent support, both are more than worthy of receiving his award. The Male Athlete Awards for 2022 were presented to Keannu Albarracin and Cameron Secundiak

Danika Soltys received the Female Athlete Award for 2022 with the award going to a graduate who has excelled at many of the sports are school has to offer such as: lacrosse, badminton, volleyball, track and cross country. This year she made it to provincials twice with her basketball team as well as in track.

Sierra Karcha received the Fighting Heart Award.

Brynn Babiuk and Kylie Babiuk each received the Spirit Award that goes to graduates who always can be counted on and are positive role models for the school and community.

Nolan Westermann received the 2022 Most Improved Student Award that goes to a graduate who has improved academically throughout their time at Sturgis School.

Austin Bartch received the Congeniality Award which was voted on by the graduates themselves. 

Next on the program was the presentations of scholarships.

Danika Soltys received the $200 Sturgis Museum scholarship. Soltys also received the Crossroads Credit Union $500 secondary school scholarship.

Brynn Babiuk received the Sturgis Bingo $300 scholarship for a student who is community minded as well as a high academic standing. Brynn also received the Town Of Sturgis $500 scholarship.

Denzel Vargas received the Parent Support Group, $300 scholarship to an all-around student.

Denzel also received an entrance scholarship in the amount of $2,000 from the University of Saskatchewan for his high academic standing. Vargas also received the Preeceville Vet Clinic $500 scholarship.

Allison Peterson received the Gateway Co-Op, Sturgis Branch, $200 scholarship.

Kylie Babiuk received the Sturgis School Community Council, $300 scholarship. Kylie also received an entrance scholarship from the University of Saskatchewan in the amount of $2,000 for her high academic standing, the Superannuated Teachers Association Sturgis Branch bursary for $200 to a graduate that is entering into the field of education and the Good Spirit Teachers Association $750 scholarship to a GSSD graduate entering education in the fall.

Camron Secundiak received the Sturgis Kin Club $500 scholarship. He also received the Norquay Legion $200 scholarship.

Paige Hansen received the Preeceville Hospital Auxiliary $300 bursary for a graduate entering the medical field. Hansen has also received the Beth and Dennis Johnson Bursary in the amount of $4,682 for her academic standing as well as an entrance scholarship from the University of Saskatchewan.

Austin Fedorchuk received the R.M. of Preeceville $500 scholarship. He also received the Aspen Paramedic Services $500 scholarship that goes to a student who will be entering into the field of medicine in the fall.

Brett Smith received the Wayne Barsby Memorial Scholarship for $1,500. It was created to show appreciation to a community that was so welcoming to the Barsby Family. The scholarship is focusing on agriculture and all related industries.

Sierra Karcha received the Preeceville Sun Local 3 scholarship for $500, awarded to a student entering the medical field.

At the conclusion of the awards portion the Top Graduate from 2021 was presented to Eloisa Vicente as she received The Governor General’s Award.
