YORKTON – The Sacred Heart High School girls bested Martensville 8–2 in the finals to win the championship.

This year the SHHS competed in the Moose Jaw soccer league and played Regina, Yorkton, Moose Jaw and Swift Current soccer teams.

In this league, the girls only lost two total games to 5A schools. They placed third place in their regular season, never losing to a 4A school once. Going to regionals, the team knew they were fighting for one spot because the provincial hosts, Regina Luther, was in their regionals competition, meaning they automatically got to go to provincials, and at regionals, only two teams advance.

At Regionals, the team first played Regina Johnson and beat them with a score of 13-0 with goals scored by Yuka Burrell, Ally Riffel, Keisha Quinto, Sam Lantin, Anya Chernoff, Condy Erhaze, Angela Fetsch and Sophie Smith.

The team then advanced to the regionals final against Regina Luther. They had already advanced to provincials at this point, but were determined to win the gold medal at the Regional tournament. The team worked hard and beat Luther 5-1 with all goals scored by Sophie Smith.

The provincial tournament was held at the University of Regina and the first game the girls played was against Chief John Kenatch. Last year the team played Chief Kenatch at provincials in the bronze medal game and won the bronze medal with a very close score of 6-5.

This year the team didn't know what to expect and thought that it might be a tough battle. The team won the game 9-1 securing their spot in the gold medal game. Goal scorers for the match were Anya Chernoff with one goal, Angela Fetsch with three goals, and Sophie Smith with five goals.

The team really showed up and won the provincial gold with a score of 8-2 with five goals from Angela Fetsch and three goals from Sophie Smith.

"We shared some names of goal scorers but there is no way the girls would have gotten this gold medal feat without contributions from every player on the team," said Coach Dean DePape of the team.

This group of girls practiced hard and were always receptive to coaching points. The team was coached this year by Mrs. Samantha Jonassen, Mrs. Jeanne Fetsch, Bailey Decker and Mr. Dean DePape.
