Man arrested following standoff on Hwy 16 remains in custody

LLOYDMINSTER – A 29-year-old man from Sweetgrass First Nation who was arrested after an hours-long standoff with RCMP remains in custody.

Nakota Pooyak was remanded in custody after his appearance in Lloydminster Provincial Court May 29 and appears again on July 10 for a show cause hearing.

Pooyak was arrested after a police chase on Highway 16 in February that resulted in a six-hour standoff near Waseca. Saskatchewan RCMP’s Critical Incident Response Team was called in and officers tried to negotiate and ended up using non-lethal intervention techniques in the arrest. Police say the vehicle was reported stolen out of Edmonton.

Pooyak was wanted at the time for being unlawfully at large. He was charged with flight from police, possession of stolen property, and resisting arrest.
