SASKATOON – A Prince Albert man was sentenced to five years in prison for using a dating app to lure and rob a Saskatoon man at gunpoint.

A two-day trial for Kobe Edwin Allan Favel that was scheduled for April in Saskatoon Provincial Court was vacated. Instead, Favel pleaded guilty.

Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) say that Favel went to a man’s home after meeting him through a dating app in November 2022. While there, the victim struggled with Favel and a gun went off, which resulted in the victim receiving minor injuries. Favel then allegedly fled the scene with the victim's vehicle, bank card, phone, and the contents of his gun safe.

The victim had called SPS and they found him in a parking lot in the 1600 block of 33rd Street West at approximately 3:30 a.m. SPS used their Air Support Unit to locate the stolen vehicle, which they said they found attempting to hide on Grey Place, and Favel was arrested without incident.

Defence counsel Cory Rediron and Crown Prosecutor Melodi Kujawa entered a joint sentencing submission to the court on Feb. 8, which Judge Bruce Bauer accepted.

In the joint submission, Favel was sentenced to 1,825 days for robbery with a restricted or prohibited firearm, 1,096 days concurrent for possession of a restricted or prohibited firearm, 730 days concurrent for unlawful confinement, imprisonment, and 546 days concurrent on charges of carrying a concealed prohibited weapon, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, and unauthorized possession of firearm in a vehicle.

Favel had remained in custody for 352 days until his sentencing and was credited with 528 days, which means he has 1,297 days left to serve.
